Bank Stocks Enduring Pressure While Indices Quietly Consolidate

There were 53 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the triple digit total of 111 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on the prior session. The major averages endured mild losses with volume totals reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Wednesday's session totals. The healthy action signaled that large institutions were in no hurry to unload stocks. Decliners only outnumbered gainers by narrow margins on both major exchanges as well. New 52-week highs continually are outnumbering new 52-week lows on both exchanges in recent weeks, and new lows on the NYSE have been in the single digits. This is a typical characteristic of a robust Bull Market, yet investors should continue reading the daily reports for any sudden shifts.

Keep in mind that during corrections earlier this year, the sudden shift from triple digit or near-triple digit totals, down to single digit totals (and zeroes) on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page. Recalling those downdrafts and "flash crashes" which occurred, it certainly deserves mention that they resulted from many stocks breaking down. Many individual issues were then beginning much deeper corrections while breadth turned horridly negative. Watch, don't guess or be sloppy, and always be sure to have good reflexes if you are trading - especially during this earnings season!

While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few Featured Stocks have broken down versus those that are working. Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check "News" links for headlines and be watching for notes concerning when companies will be reporting results for the latest quarter. Always employ proper discipline by not chasing extended stocks and never holding losses that grow larger than -7-8%, per the fact-based system's guidelines.

On Thursday Wall Street failed to extend a four-day winning streak. Financial shares, including Bank of America Corp (BAC -5.2%), were the weakest performers amid concerns banks will face increasing legal costs to cover faulty mortgage foreclosures. Soft economic data and a poorly-received Treasury auction applied moderate pressure on stocks. Apollo Group Inc (APOL -23%) was quickly expelled after the operator of the University of Phoenix withdrew its profit forecast due to falling attendance and scrutiny from regulators.

The major averages' respective summer highs come into play as support to watch above their important 50-day and 200-day moving averages (DMA) lines. The Indices' ability to eventually eclipse the year's earlier highs could easily coincide with much greater upward momentum in the market. Trade accordingly.

Bank Index Showing Worrisome Action Again

Defensive groups fared best on Thursday as there was a flat or mildly negative bias to the activity for the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.03%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.00%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.33%), and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.61%). Tech shares were weaker as the Networking Index ($NWX -0.86%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.46%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.23%), and Internet Index ($IIX -0.17%) ended with losses of less than -1%. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.32%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.32%) had a negative bias, while the Bank Index ($BKX -2.63%) was the ugly spot on the radar.
