Positive Breadth, Volume Up As Indices Post Gains After Weak Start

The Dow Jones Industrial Average recovered from an early loss of 96 points to finish up 10 points as the major averages reversed early losses and drifted modestly higher following signs that the Federal Reserve is poised to take more steps to boost the economy. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Monday's session totals. The healthy action signaled that large institutions had an appetite for buying stocks as advancers led decliners by almost a 3-to-2 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 45 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the 76 issues that appeared on the prior session.

The minutes from the last FOMC meeting indicated that policymakers were closer to a consensus on asset purchases or other steps. Oil service companies were boosted by the White House decision to lift a ban on deepwater drilling sooner than expected. Transocean Ltd (RIG +4.68%) was among the group's big gainers. Meanwhile, headlines included Apple Corp (AAPL +1.08%) and Wal-Mart (WMT -1.26%) announcing that the retail giant would start selling the iPad. King Pharmaceuticals (KG +39.31%) gapped up after Pfizer (PFE +0.57%) announced it will buy the company for $3.6 billion.

Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check headlines and watch for notes concerning Featured Stocks and when they will be reporting results for the latest quarter. While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few have broken down.

The nearest level of support for the major averages is their respective summer highs that come into play before their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines. The indices face resistance at their respective April highs which are in close striking range as the Dow is only -2.1%, S&P 500 Index is -4.1% and Nasdaq Composite Index is -4.6% off 2010's respective peak(s). The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index is -4.4% off its April 2010 peak. Its 50 DMA line has recently gotten back above its 200 DMA line, an encouraging sign. The Dow (not shown) is the only one of the three major averages which has recently seen its 50 DMA trade back above its 200 DMA line. It would be encouraging to see the other indices follow that trend and eventually eclipse the year's earlier highs, all of which could easily coincide with much greater upward momentum in the market.

Financial, Tech, and Oil Services Groups Rise

The financial group had a positive bias as the Bank Index ($BKX +1.54%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.54%) posted gains on Tuesday. The tech sector also rose as the Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.75%), Internet Index ($IIX +0.91%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.97%) posted unanimous gains. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.37%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.30%) edged lower while the Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.65%) rallied on news the moratorium on deep-water drilling was lifted. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.84%) continued to rally.

Relative Strength Waning as Mining Firm Sputters

Eldorado Gold Corp's (EGO -$0.15 or -0.81% to $18.42) volume totals have been cooling while consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Its recent low ($17.65) defines an important chart support level. It has been consolidating for about 4 weeks and could be forming a sound new base, while in due time a subsequent breakout above its prior chart highs in the $20 area might be encouraging. Meanwhile it may spend more time basing, and it is an ideal candidate for disciplined investors' watchlists.

This a Canada-based mining firm's Accumulation/Distribution rank has slumped to a D (see red circle) while it has sputtered since featured in the mid-day report on 8/19/10 (read here) in yellow with a pivot point based on its 52-week high plus ten cents. Its Relative Strength line has also been slumping for several weeks. EGO reported great sales and earnings increases in Mar and Jun '10 quarterly comparisons and it has a very impressive earnings growth rate in recent years.
