Major Indices Ended Mixed With Lighter Volume Totals
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 40,000 for the first time, gaining +0.3% Friday. The S&P 500 (+0.1%) also closed with a gain and the Nasdaq Composite (-0.1%) settled slightly lower. Volume reported was lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 59 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page versus 89 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted but still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria).
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index paused and churned heavier volume after hitting a new all-time highs with volume-driven gains.
The S&P 500 sectors reflected mixed action as energy closed +1.4% higher, but none of the sectors moved more than 0.9% in either direction. The consumer discretionary sector was helped by a move higher in shares of Tesla (TSLA +1.50%) on news that it plans to cut 600 positions in California. Amazon.com (AMZN +0.6%) also closed higher.
The 10-yr note yield settled four basis points higher at 4.42%. The 2-ry note yield rose three basis points to 4.82%.
