Major Averages Rose With Less Volume Conviction

Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The Dow rose 82 points to 17,924. The S&P 500 gained 8 points to 2,088. The NASDAQ Composite advanced 26 points to 4,945. The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE, a sign of less serious buying demand from the institutional crowd. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 17 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 14 stocks. New 52-week lows again outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 11 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, according to the newspaper the market earned the label of being in a "correction" following Wednesday's action - due to distributional action in the major indices and waning leadership (fewer stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should be avoided until a new confirmed rally with a follow-through day under the guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index recently violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with volume-driven losses.

The major averages snapped a two-day decline led by a gain in tech stocks. Alibaba (BABA +7.5%) rose after posting earnings ahead of consensus estimates. Yahoo, (YHOO +5.3%) benefited as a stakeholder in the Chinese e-Commerce company. Microsoft (MSFT +0.9%) and Apple (AAPL +0.6%) both edged higher.

Investors also appeared encouraged by a better-than-expected weekly jobless claims figure ahead of tomorrow’s update on the labor market. First time filings for unemployment benefits edged up 3,000 to 265,000 versus a projected 280,000 increase. The Labor Department is expected to report non-farm payrolls grew 228,000 and the unemployment rate ticked down to 5.4% in April.

Along with tech, financials and industrials paced the advance as J.P. Morgan (JPM -0.9%) and American Airlines (AAL +4.3%) both rose. Energy was down the most on the session. Shares of Noble Corp (NBL -6.6%) fell as oil retreated. Whole Foods (WFM -9.7%) and Keurig Green Mountain (GMCR -9.2%) sank after both posted earnings below projections.

Treasuries rebounded from the prior selloff. Benchmark 10-year notes rose 17/32 to yield 2.18%.

In commodities, NYMEX crude fell -2.1% to $58.80/barrel. COMEX gold slipped -0.7% to $1181.50/ounce.

Tech Indices and Broker/Dealer Index Rose; Energy-Linked Groups Fell

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.67%) was a positive influence on the major averages while the Bank Index ($BKX -0.13%) edged lower.  The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.13%) led the tech sector while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.80%) and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.79%) followed with modest gains. Energy-related areas were weak as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.71%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.00%) both lost ground.   The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.35%) posted a small gain.

Perched at All-Time High Following Volume-Driven Gains

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (VRX +$1.99 or +0.92% to $218.25) is perched near its at all-time highs, consolidating after 4 consecutive volume-driven gains into new hihgh territory. It found prompt support its 50-day moving average (DMA) line recently but it did not form a sound base.

The high-ranked Medical - Ethical Drugs firm reported earnings +34% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, an improvement after Dec '14 earnings below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). It was last shown in this FSU section on 4/14/15 with annotated daily and weekly graphs under the headline, "Perched at All-Time High But Concerns Remain After Sub Par Quarter".

It completed a new Public Offering on 3/17/15 and completed an earlier Public Offering on 6/18/13. The upshot of such offerings is that the end result is typically an increase in the total number of institutional owners. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,056 in Mar '14 to 1,245 in Mar '15, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria.  A downturn in FY '07 and '08 earnings (A criteria) was followed by a strong earnings rebound in recent years.

VRX gapped up on 2/23/15 for a considerable volume-driven gain on news it will acquire Salix Pharmaceuticals (SLXP). It was highlighted at $144.84 in yellow in the 1/05/15 mid-day report (read here) with an annotated weekly graph showing a new pivot point cited based on the 12/22/14 high while building a cup-with-handle base. Subsequent gains above the pivot point on 1/08/15 were backed by +71% above average volume triggering a new technical buy signal.

G - Reported earnings +5% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), a fundamental flaw making it a less favorable buy candidate. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and new annotated graphs. Prior reports cautioned - "It did not produce gains above the pivot point backed by at least the +40% above average volume necessary to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch."

Subsequent volume-driven gains may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Found support when recently consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($70.29) defining important near term support to watch on pullbacks.

G - Color code is changed to green after slumping below support at its 50 DMA line ($154.73) with today's 4th consecutive loss raising concerns. Only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve. Technically, it broke out on 4/23/15 with a volume-driven gain for new highs, and healthy stocks rarely fall more than -7% below their pivot point in favorable market environments. Reported earnings +29% on +64% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter.

Consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($38.62) which defines near-term support. Disciplined investors always limit losses if a stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
