After Disappointing Economic Data Indices Ended Mixed

Stocks were under pressure as investors responded to disappointing economic readings on Wednesday. The volume totals were again reported mixed, slightly higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners slightly on the Nasdaq exchange while decliners had a narrow lead over advancers on the NYSE. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs was lower, yet new highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 49 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 89 stocks. The session concluded with gains for 30 of the 42 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

On the economic front, private payroll employment fell short of consensus with 119,000 jobs added. Projections were for 170,000 jobs to be added. In addition, Factory orders for March fell -1.5% in the month, narrowly topping consensus estimates for a -1.7% decline following February’s +1.3% advance.

The Clorox Co (CLX -3.17%), Peet's Coffee & Tea Inc (PEET -8.12%), Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK -14.59%), OpenTable Inc (OPEN -14.99%), and Bankrate Inc (RATE -14.83%) fell short of analysts' estimates in the quarter. On the upside, travel website TripAdvisor (TRIP +16.70%) rallied following the company's better-than-expected profit tally.

Consumer stocks were the relative outperformers on the S&P. In the retail space, True Religion Apparel Inc (TRLG +3.52%) rose after the company initiated a 20 cent dividend and announced a share buyback program. American Eagle Outfitters Inc (AEO +16.53%) raised its full year earnings guidance. Meanwhile, financials were the worst performing sector and shares of Citigroup Inc (C -2.68%) led the sector lower.

On the M&A front, Charming Shoppes (CHRS +23.9%) rallied on the $7.35 per share offer from Ascena Retail Group Inc (ASNA +10.41%). Standard Microsystems Corp (SMSC +38.83%) rose after the company agreed to be acquired by Microchip Technology Inc (MCHP -0.88%) for about $37 per share.

Among the stocks currently included on the Featured Stocks Page, Ubiquiti Networks Inc (UBNT -17.43%) topped estimates and gave in-line guidance, but its shares tumbled. Sharp pullbacks in other recent leaders that dropped off the Featured Stocks list, Herbalife Ltd (HLF) and Tempur Pedic International Inc (TPX), serve as vivid reminders - investors should always be disciplined and watch for a proper technical buy signal to be confirmed before taking any action, then steadfastly protect capital by selling whenever any stock falls more than -7% from the purchase price.

With the major averages' (M criteria) noted follow-through-day the market back has resumed its "confirmed uptrend" which gives investors the signal to take action as any ideal buy candidates emerge from sound base patterns. Healthy market leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) is critical to any market rally, so investors should watch for the new highs lists to include a large number of stocks reaching the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page. Disciplined investors know that even in a bullish environment, following proper rules for buying and selling increases their likelihood of getting the "above average" gains they are seeking.

Retail and Most Tech Groups Posted Gains

The Retail Index ($RLX +0.91%) posted a gain that had a positive influence on the major averages, meanwhile weak action in the financial groups led to losses for the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.69%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -0.92%) which worked to offset other gains. Defensive groups showed mixed action as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.72%) sank yet the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.91%) tallied a small gain. Energy-related shares fell and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.40%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.14%) ended lower. The Networking Index ($NWX -1.19%) created a drag on the tech sector, however gains from the Internet Index ($IIX +0.24%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.47%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.24%) helped the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index outpace its peers and finish with a small gain.

Recent Gap Up Following Tight Consolidation

Often, when a leading stock is setting up to breakout of a solid base it is highlighted in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report. The most relevant factors are noted in the report which alerts prudent CANSLIM oriented investors to place the issue in their watch list. After doing any necessary backup research, the investor is prepared to act after the stock triggers a technical buy signal (breaks above its pivot point on more than +50% average turnover) but before it gets too extended from a sound base. In the event the stock fails to trigger a technical buy signal and its price declines then it will simply be removed from the watch list. Disciplined investors know to buy as near as possible to the pivot point and avoid chasing stocks after they have rallied more than +5% above their pivot point. It is crucial to always limit losses whenever any stock heads the wrong direction, and disciplined investors sell if a struggling stock ever falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

Rentech Nitrogen Ptnr Lp (RNF +$0.08 or +0.27% to $29.43) is hovering near its new 52-week high (N criteria) today, stubbornly holding its ground after a spurt of gains on ever-increasing volume. The recent orderly consolidation in a tight range was longer than a "3-weeks tight" base pattern and RNF was highlighted in yellow in the 4/27/12 mid-day breakouts report (read here) when rallying above the pivot point cited based on its 4/12/12 high plus 10 cents. It has sufficient ranks and showed strong earnings increases satisfying the C criteria. Its 11/04/11 IPO was priced at $20, and its limited history is a concern. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 42 in Dec '11 to 49 in Mar '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Leadership from other companies in the Chemicals - Agriculture group (concerning the L criteria) is a reassuring sign.
