Major Averages Started May With Gains on Lighter Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow slipped -0.3%, the S&P 500 lost -0.4% and the NASDAQ Composite fell -1.7%. The major averages started the month of May with solid gains. Stocks rose on Friday's session as the Dow gained 184 points to 18,024. The S&P 500 climbed 23 points to 2,108. The NASDAQ Composite advanced 64 points to 5,005. Behind the gains, the volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE, a sign of lackluster buying demand from the institutional crowd. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and 3-2 on the NYSE. However, leadership waned as there were 17 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down a notch from the prior session total of 18 stocks. New 52-week lows matched new 52-week highs on the NYSE, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 10 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages recently endured distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index found support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line during its recent consolidations.
U.S equities rebounded from Thursday's retreat that sent the major averages down by more than -1%. Biotech recovered from its recent decline to pace the market advance. Shares of Gilead Sciences (GILD +4.5%) rose following a better-than-expected earnings report. Among other quarterly releases, CVS Health (CVS rose 1.2% to $100.46 as quarterly profits beat consensus estimates. LinkedIn (LNKD -18.6%) after reducing its full-year forecast.
On the economic front, construction spending unexpectedly fell 0.6% in March versus expectations to gain 0.5%. Additional releases revealed manufacturing activity slowed in April while consumer sentiment remained near its best levels since 2007.
Materials were up the most on the session. Alcoa (AA +5.4%) rose after announcing changes to its board of directors. Seed maker Monsanto (MON +3.9%) rose amid reports it approached Swiss rival Syngenta about a merger. Telecom was the lone sector lower led by AT&T slipping (T -0.6%).
Treasuries retreated with benchmark 10-year notes falling 19/32 to yield 2.11%.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude declined 0.5% to $59.34/barrel. COMEX gold was 0.5% lower at $1,176.30/ounce.

Testing Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
FleetCor Technologies, Inc (FLT -$1.76 or -1.09% to $159.13) was highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) while testing support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($154.74) with a volume-driven loss. Technically, it broke out on 4/23/15 with a volume-driven gain for new highs, and healthy stocks rarely fall more than -7% below their pivot point in favorable market environments.
It reported earnings +29% on +64% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter. Fundamentals (C and A criteria) remain a good match with the fact-based investment system's guidelines. It found support at its 200 DMA line and made gradual progress since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 12/16/14. Its Relative Strength rating of 85 remains above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates.
FLT last appeared in this FSU section on 12/08/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Testing Support While Encountering Recent Distributional Pressure". The company hails from the Finance - Credit Card Payment Processing group which saw big gains in recent weeks from Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA). Impressive strength and leadership from other firms in the same industry group is a reassurance concerning the L criteria. The company completed a Secondary Offering on 9/11/13. Prior Secondary Offerings on 3/14/12, 6/11/12, 11/29/12, and 3/08/13 were previously noted, "Such offerings often are a short-term hindrance to upward price progress yet typically result in broader institutional ownership interest." The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 603 in Jun '14 to 648 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.

G - Color code is changed to green as concerned were raised after gapping down today, a 2nd consecutive loss with above average volume while retreating from its 52-week high. Reported earnings +5% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), a fundamental flaw making it a less favorable buy candidate. Prior reports cautioned - "It did not produce gains above the pivot point backed by at least the +40% above average volume necessary to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch."
