Major Averages Resumed Rally With Rebound Above 50-Day Averages

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose +1.53%, and the S&P 500 Index added +1.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index rallied +2.29%. Friday's volume totals were reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange while the major averages rose. Investors shrugged off disappointing economic data and advancers led decliners by about 2-1 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs continued to swell meaningfully and new highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 94 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up considerably again from the prior session total of 72 stocks. The session concluded with gains for 36 of the 42 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Mostly positive reports in corporate earnings are outshining disappointing economic news. The employment cost index rose 0.4%, below the projected 0.5% advance. The preliminary reading on U.S. first-quarter GDP came in at 2.2%, worse than the expected 2.5% reading. The University of Michigan’s April consumer sentiment index unexpectedly improved to 76.4, better than unchanged at 75.7 from the preliminary reading two weeks ago.

Corporate profit tallies have been largely better-than-expected. Consumer discretionary stocks led sector gainers as Amazon.com Inc (AMZN +15.75%) posted a better-than-expected earnings report after sales in their Kindle reading devices topped estimates. Also among earnings, travel website Expedia Inc (EXPE +23.54%) topped analysts' projections in the quarter. Social-networking game developer Zynga Inc (ZNGA -9.55%) fell despite posting better-than-expected first-quarter revenues. On the downside, Deckers Outdoor Corp (DECK -25.38%) and Starbucks Corp (SBUX -5.32%) fell following their disappointing results.

Wednesday's gains helped the major averages' (M criteria) stance improve meaningfully, as this commentary noted their rebound above their respective 50-day moving average (DMA) lines. Considered a follow-through-day, the market back has resumed its "confirmed uptrend" which gives investors the signal to take action as any ideal buy candidates emerge from sound base patterns. Healthy market leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) is critical to any market rally, so investors should watch for the new highs lists to include a large number of stocks reaching the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page. Retail Index and Internet Index Led Gainers

The Retail Index ($RLX +3.54%) was a standout gainer underpinning the major averages' gain on Friday. Financial shares were mixed and fairly quiet as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.30%) edged lower and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.27%) posted a small gain. The Internet Index ($IIX +2.10%) led the tech sector higher while there were smaller gains from the Networking Index ($NWX +0.49%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.17%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.01%) finished flat. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.36%) rose while energy-related shares had a slightly negative drift and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.67%) fell while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.03%) ended unchanged. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -3.03%) lost ground, making it a clear laggard.

Four Times Average Volume While Rising From Double Bottom Base

Jazz Pharmaceuticals Plc's (JAZZ +$6.52 or +14.42% to $51.72) considerable gap up gain today was backed by 4 times average volume, rising from a "double bottom" base and touching a new all-time high (N criteria). The mid-day report (read here) included it highlighted in yellow with a pivot point cited based on its 4/10/12 high. The close above its pivot point clinched a technical buy signal, however its finish in the lower half of its intra-day range was a sign that it was also encountering some resistance near its 52-week high. Of some concern is its poor D+ Accumulation/Distribution Rating (see red circle). The current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 0.7 also is an unbiased indication that its shares have been coming under distributional pressure during the past 50 days. It proposed a Secondary Offering on 3/05/12. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks that get too extended from a sound base, and they always limit losses if ever any stock falls -7% from their purchase price.

Its annual earnings (A criteria) history is limited, however quarterly comparisons through Dec '11 have shown strong sales revenues and earnings (good C criteria) increases. Its big FY '10 and '11 earnings followed losses in prior years. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 236 in Jun '11 to 344 in Mar '12, a very reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Medical - Ethical Drugs group is currently showing good leadership (L criteria) while coming in with an A- rating for its Group Relative Strength. Its upcoming earnings release will be noted, and investors should expect that volume and volatility frequently increase near earnings news.
