Leadership Expands as Major Averages Rally on Higher Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow advanced +2.1% and the S&P 500 gained +2.7%. The NASDAQ rallied +3.2%, putting it above 5,000 and less than 0.5% away from its March 2000 all-time high. Stocks advanced on Friday. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, inflated by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership expanded as there were 150 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 93 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs swelled and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has been supported by a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. Recent expansion in leadership is an encouraging sign for the market outlook. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index had heavy volume behind a 5th consecutive gain as it rallied 34 points to 5,026.
The Dow climbed 168 points to 18127. The S&P 500 advanced 18 points to 2108. The major averages pushed higher as oil prices climbed and the dollar weakened. At the close, all 10 sectors of the S&P 500 were in positive territory. Energy was up the most in sympathy with the price of WTI crude with Chevron (CVX +2.18) rising. Bank of America (BAC +1.47%) rose as financials were another notable gainer. In health care stocks, Biogen Idec (BIIB +9.76%) was higher after positive drug trial results.
Economic data was light, with the Baker Hughes rig count showing it fell slightly over the last week. Treasuries continued to climb. The 10-year note rose 13/32 to yield 1.92%.
Commodities finished mostly higher. WTI crude surged +4% to $45.72. COMEX gold gained +1.1% to $1,181.90. In FOREX, the dollar lost 1.3% with the euro 1.5% higher to $1.0816/EUR and the yen up +0.7% to ¥120.00/USD.

Consolidating Above Support at Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Qualys Inc (QLYS -$0.18 or -0.38% to $46.47) has been consolidating above prior highs in the $40-41 area and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line which define important near-term support to watch. It was last shown in this FSU section on 3/02/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Near Highs and Tallying Another Big Volume-Driven Gain".
QLYS was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/26/14 high plus 10 cents in the 2/06/15 mid-day report (read here). Technically, it had triggered a technical buy signal on the prior session. It soon blasted new 52-week high (N criteria) with a gap up and volume-driven gain into new high territory after reporting earnings +200% on +26% for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 versus the year ago period, beating expectations. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. That marked its 4th consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria).
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 152 in Mar '14 to 212 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.2 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 18.7 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to great volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The Computer Software - Security group has a 96 Group Relative Strength Rating, and leadership (L criteria) in the industry group is another favorable factor with respect to the fact-based investment system.
