Leadership Improved as Major Averages Rallied

Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The Dow climbed 259 points to 17894. The S&P 500 advanced 25 points to 2,065. The NASDAQ gained 43 points to 4,893. The volume totals for the session were mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by an 11-4 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 55 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 20 stocks. The new 52-week highs totals improved and solidly outnumbered new lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has recently come under pressure. Readers were reminded that any sustained rally for the major averages requires a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs.  New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior highs defining near-term support.

The major averages pushed higher as mixed data spurred speculation of rate increase delays. A measure of retail sales for February unexpectedly declined; however, jobless claims last week fell 36,000 to 289,000. Meanwhile, a gauge of business inventories remained flat in January versus estimates of a +0.1% increase.

At the close, nine of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were in positive territory. Financials led the advance following the mostly successful Fed stress tests. Citigroup (C +3.3%) and JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +1.9%) both rose. Despite lowered retail sales, consumer discretionary was another notable outperformer. Disney (DIS +4.2%) contributed with a big advance. Energy was the lone sector lower with Chevron's (CVX -1.1%) decline weighing on the group.

Treasuries finished mixed. The 10-year was virtually unchanged, yielding 2.11%; however amid a $13 billion auction, the 30-year bond lost 4/32 to yield 2.69%.

Commodities were mostly lower. WTI crude reversed course to lose 2.3% to $47.05/brl. and a large inventory build sent natural gas down 3% to $2.74/MMBtu. COMEX gold advanced 0.2% to $1,152.30/oz. In FOREX, the dollar trimmed losses but still finished 0.4% lower. The euro strengthened 0.7% to $1.0621/EUR and the yen gained 0.1% to ¥121.34/USD.

Retail, Financial, Networking and Biotech Indexes Rose

The Retail Index ($RLX +2.07%) posted a big gain and financials were a positive influence on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.14%) and Bank Index ($BKX +2.54%) both tallied big gains. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.91%) and Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%) both posted modest gains while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.06%) edged lower. There was a slightly negative bias for commodity-linked groups as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.41%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.44%), and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.61%) each fell.

Fundamentals Improved But No New Base Has Formed

Palo Alto Networks (PANW +$0.61 or +0.43% to $141.17) saw recent losses with above average volume while consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. That important short-term average (now $131.38) defines near-term support to watch on pullbacks where a violation may trigger a technical sell signal. Recent losses on above average volume were indicative of distributional pressure and it is very extended from any sound base. Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks more the +5% above prior highs and they always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

PANW reported earnings +90% on +54% sales revenues for the Jan '15 quarter, its 3rd consecutive comparison with strong sales revenues increases and earnings above the +25% minimum guideline satisfying the C criteria. It now has an Earnings Per Share (EPS) Rating of 99. It has a strong annual earnings (A criteria) history.

The Computer Software - Security firm was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 2/23/15 under the headline, "Reversed Into Red After Touching a New High". After breaking out 9/02/14 it has spent very little time basing, and it is very extended from any sound base, yet could produce more climactic gains.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 246 in Jun '13 to 617 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of 68.3 million shares in the public float is another favorable characteristic.
