Major Averages Fell With Lighter Volume Totals

The major averages finished lower on Monday. The Dow lost 95 points to 17,729. The S&P 500 declined 8 points to 2,046. The NASDAQ Composite fell 18 points to 4,726. Volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of less selling pressure from the institutional crowd. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by a 9-5 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 55 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 74 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 3 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, additional gains for the major averages have followed last Monday's "positive reversal", avoiding more worrisome technical damage that could have signaled the beginning of a serious market "correction".

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line after rallying from its 200 DMA line.

Further signs of slowdown in China and Greek debt woes prompted a round of profit taking following last week’s rally. China's exports and imports unexpectedly declined in January. In Europe, Greece's Prime Minister vowed to negotiate an end to austerity measures, which renewed debt default fears.

Nine of the 10 sectors in the S&P 500 retreated. Health care was the worst performing group. Index-heavyweight Johnson & Johnson (JNJ -1.4%). Losses in utilities and consumer staples also weighed on the market as NextEra Energy (NEE -1.3%) and Procter & Gamble (PG -0.7%) fell. Energy was the only sector in positive territory as WTI crude jumped +2.3% to $52.87 per barrel after OPEC lowered its 2015 forecast for U.S. crude production as lower prices reduce drilling. Chevron (CVX +0.8%) edged higher and Transocean (RIG  +10.3%) posted a big gain.

On the earnings front, Coca-Cola (KO -0.6%) and CVS Health (CVS -1.1%) fell ahead of their profit tallies before the opening bell Tuesday.

Treasuries erased earlier gains and finished lower for the third-straight session. The 10-year note fell 1/32 to yield 1.96%. The 30-year bond declined 3/32 to yield 2.53%.

Commodity-Linked Groups Rose While Other Groups Fell

Weakness in financials created drag on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.95%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -0.64%) fell, and the influential Retail Index ($RLX -0.53%) also ended lower.  The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.09%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.65%) outpaced the Networking Index ($NWX -0.18%) to the downside. Commodity-linked groups rose and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.55%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.50%), and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.73%) each posted gains.

Strong Dec '14 Earnings Report While Perched Near All-Time High

Qualys Inc (QLYS +$0.50 or +1.24% to $40.85) posted a gain today backed by +120% above average volume and finished 4 cents off last Thursday's best-ever close. After the close it reported earnings +200% on +26% for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 versus the year ago period, beating expectations. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news.

QLYS encountered distributional pressure after hitting a new 52-week high (N criteria) and there was a "negative reversal" for a volume-driven loss on Friday, closing below its pivot point. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/26/14 high plus 10 cents in the 2/06/15 mid-day report (read here). Technically, it had triggered a technical buy signal on the prior session. It had last been noted in the 11/06/14 mid-day report with caution - "Reported earnings +88% on +24% sales revenues for the Sep '14 quarter, marking its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Patient investors may watch for a new base or secondary buy point to develop and be noted in the weeks ahead."

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 152 in Mar '14 to 204 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 18.7 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to great volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The Computer Software - Security group has a 95 Group Relative Strength Rating, and leadership (L criteria) in the industry group is another favorable factor with respect to the fact-based investment system.

Y - Up today following a considerable "breakaway gap" on the prior session triggering a technical buy signal. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/19/14 high plus 10 cents in the 2/06/15 mid-day report (read here). Reported earnings +56% on +44% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, its 3rd consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). A "breakaway gap" is the one noted exception where investors may chase a stock more than +5% above prior highs, however risk increases that an ordinary pullback may trigger the strict sell rules requiring disciplined investors to always limit losses. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and annotated graphs.

Y - Hit a new all-time high (N criteria) today and finished near its "max buy" level. No resistance remains to hinder its progress. The big gain backed by +95% above average volume confirmed a technical buy signal. Reported +36% earnings on +19% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, better than estimates, along with providing encouraging guidance. Its 50 DMA line ($77.24) acted as support recently, whereas a damaging violation would raise concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.
