Leadership Thinned as Major Indices Sputtered

Stocks finished slightly lower Tuesday. The Dow lost 33 points to 26,057 while the S&P 500 slipped 2 points to 2,793. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5 points to 7,549. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by almost a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by more than 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership thinned as there were only 24 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 84 on the prior session. New 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria) while healthy leadership has underpinned the market. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index ended -5% below its record high hit on 9/21/18. Steady progress above its 200-day moving average (DMA) line was noted as technical improvement.

The major averages declined in choppy trading as investors digested economic and central bank updates. On the data front, the Conference Board reported consumer confidence rebounded sharply in February to 131.4 from the prior 121.7 reading. Another report showed manufacturing activity in the Richmond Fed district strengthened more than anticipated in February. Additional readings revealed housing starts fell 11.2% in December, while building permits gained 0.3%. During his semi-annual testimony on monetary policy to the Senate Banking Committee, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell noted that policymakers will remain “patient” in future rate hikes.

Seven of 11 S&P 500 sectors ended in negative territory. The Materials group lagged with Newmont Mining (NEM -3.19%) falling. In earnings, Home Depot (HD -0.88%) fell after providing forward guidance below Wall Street’s expectations. AutoZone (AZO +5.10%) and JM Smucker (SJM +4.98%) rose after both companies beat consensus estimates on both the top and bottom line. Macy’s (M +1.48%) rose after announcing a cost saving restructuring plan.

Treasuries strengthened with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note down three basis points to 2.64%. In commodities, WTI crude added 0.3% to $55.65/barrel. COMEX gold fell 0.1% to $1,325.10/ounce despite a weaker dollar.

Twice Average Volume Behind Gain for New High

Nexstar Media Group Cl A (NXST +$3.98 or +4.38% to $94.84) finished the session strong after highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/04/18 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Its solid gain for a new 52-week high today was backed by twice average volume, clinching a technical buy signal.

Recent quarterly comparisons through Dec '18 showed strong earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) versus the year ago periods with encouraging sales revenues acceleration. Its strong annual earnings history (A criteria) helped it get the highest possible Earnings Per Share Rating of 99.

The number of top rated funds owning its shares rose from 415 in Mar '18 to 509 in Dec '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.  Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio or 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It completed Secondary Offerings on 11/29/12 and 2/08/13.
